A software specialist at the parent company of search engine Google, Alphabet, who claimed that an artificial intelligence program possessed a consciousness of its own has been fired for this reason.

Suspended for claiming on June 13 that an artificial intelligence program he was working on for Google had become conscious and a "nice guy," Blake Lemoine was finally fired by the Mountain View firm, it was learned on July 23 according to various sources.

Google justified the dismissal of the IT manager Blake Lemoine by the violation of company guidelines and by claims "totally unfounded".

AI shows feelings according to developer

Lemoine had said, after months of testing the artificial intelligence (AI)-driven chatbot LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), that the program was independent in its responses and showed feelings. He compared LaMDA to a person with a conscience of its own.

"It is unfortunate that despite lengthy discussions on this matter, Blake continued to violate clear labor and data protection guidelines, which include the protection of product information", a group spokesperson responded to a request from Reuters. Google and leading scientists have rejected Lemoine's view as false. LaMDA is a complex algorithm that was developed to produce convincing human speech, they said.
